Description

1084 High Carbon Steel 38mm wide bars available in 900 or 1220mm long is a high carbon steel especially suitable for use by new and experienced knife makers as a knife steel. It is one of the easiest and most forgiving knife steels to heat treat and is simple to work whether performing stock removal or forging.

1084 steel can be paired with 15N20 to make damascus, where the 1084 layers become darker while the high nickel of 15N20 becomes lighter within the pattern when etched in Ferric Chloride Powder.

This German Made carbon steel is some of the world’s finest blade steel and comes annealed (soft).

Alloy Composition:

Element %
Carbon (C): 0.80 – 0.93%
Manganese (Mn): 0.60 – 0.90%
Phosphorus (P): 0.03%
Sulphur (S) 0.05%

Recommended Working Sequence:

Forging:  815 – 1175°C. Do not forge below 815°C

Normalising: Heat to 870°C, cool to black in still air, follow up with refinement cycles at a lower temperature

Annealing: Heat to 815°C, furnace cool to 650°C at a rate not exceeding 28°C per hour, or bury in an insulating material like vermiculite or wood ash

Grinding, Drilling, Machining

Recommended Heat Treatment:

  • Coat in Anti Scale Compound
  • Austenitise at 815°C until evenly heated. An extended soak time is not required, nor is heating the entire blade and tang i.e. just the edge can be heated
  • Quench in oil pre-heated to 50-60°C – Houghton’s G Medium Quench Oil or vegetable oil will all be effective in hardening 1084
  • Temper at 200°C for 2 hours, twice

As quenched hardness 65HRC.

Tempered hardness at 200°C 60-61HRC.

Recommended working hardness 58-62HRC, depending on application.

Often Purchased With:

Handle Materials, Kevin Cashen’s Guide and Ferric Chloride Powder.
