Description
One bar of 52100 Carbon Steel measuring 3.2 x 63 x 1220 mm. A high carbon, chromium, low alloy, through hardening steel.
52100 steel is very popular for use in bearings due to its wear resistance and strength. Also, regarded among knife makers for high performance knives. Whether it’s a carbon steel kitchen knife or hunting knife, if you’re after a high performance cutter, 52100 is well worth your consideration.
Excellent to use from forging to finishing. It has great hardness, wear resistance and toughness on its own, or forge-welded to other steels such as 410 and 416 Stainless Steel.
This is some of the best-quality 52100 steel. Made in Germany and comes pickled and annealed (soft).
Alloy Composition:
Element | % |
Carbon (C): | 0.98 – 1.10% |
Chromium (CR) | 1.30 – 1.60% |
Nickel (Ni) | 0.30% |
Manganese (Mn): | 0.25 – 0.45% |
Silicon (Si): | 0.15 – 0.30% |
Copper (Cu): | 0.20 – 0.30% |
Phosphorus (P): | 0.025 – 0.030% |
Sulphur (S): | 0.025% |
Aluminium (Al) | 0.05% |
Recommended Working Sequence:
Forging: Heat to 1150°C maximum. Do not forge after temperature of the forging stock has dropped below approximately 925°C
Normalizing: Heat to 885°C and cool in still air
Annealing: For a predominately spheroidized structure which is generally desired for machining, heat to 795°C and cool rapidly to 750°C, then continue cooling to 675°C at a rate not exceeding 6°C per hour. As an alternative technique, heat to 795°C, cool rapidly to 690°C and hold for 16 hours.
Grinding or Machining
Recommended Heat Treatment:
- Coat in Anti Scale Compound
- Austenitise at 815-830°C until evenly heated. An extended soak time is not required, nor is heating the entire blade and tang i.e. just the edge can be heated
- Quench in oil pre-heated to 50-60°C – Houghtons K Fast Quench
- Temper at 150-200°C for 2 hours, twice
- Use Cryo to increase toughness & hardness
As quenched hardness 65HRC.
Tempered hardness at 200°C 60-61HRC.
Recommended working hardness 58-62HRC, depending on application.
