CPM 154 is a particle metallurgy version of 154CM, a stainless steel developed in 1959 for use as bearings in jet engines, when a new rust resistant alloy capable of withstanding higher temperatures was required. In 2004 Crucible Industries started producing CPM 154 to supply knifemakers with a high-quality stainless steel with well-balanced properties and greater ease of hand finishing compared to high vanadium steels, and it has found popularity for use in custom knives of all sizes.

Compared to other CPM or particle metallurgy steels CPM 154 has better toughness – it can withstand more impact and lateral stress. It has greater ease of sharpening and ease of hand or belt finishing. Its wear resistance or edge retention is lower than higher vanadium stainless steels like CPM S30V, CPM S35VN, CPM 20CV, M390 and Elmax, which is why it is preferred for custom knives with a hand sanded finish, while it still offers edge retention around 20% higher than 440C stainless steel.

CPM 154 manufactured by Crucible Industries and RWL34 manufactured by Erasteel are equivalent alloys with the same composition, made in similar particle metallurgy processes where the liquid alloy is formed into fine powder/particles, then reheated, sintered and pressed into a bar. This process creates a very fine grain structure in the steel, fine carbide size and even distribution of alloying elements, giving the steel its properties of increased toughness and polishability compared to conventional cast versions of the same alloy.

Recommended Heat Treatment

  • Seal blade in double crimped high temperature stainless steel tool wrap
  • Preheat to 760°C, hold for 5 minutes
  • Austenitise at 1065°C for 30 minutes
  • Plate quench
  • Cold treatment; domestic freezer, dry ice slurry, liquid nitrogen – the colder the better
  • Temper at 150-230°C for 2 hours, twice

Recommended working hardness 59 – 63 HRC

For maximum hardness at a small loss in toughness:

  • 760°C 5 minutes
  • 1105°C 20 minutes
  • Plate quench
  • Liquid nitrogen cryo
  • Temper at 150°C for 2 hours, twice, for 64 HRC

If not using liquid nitrogen or dry ice:

  • 760°C 5 minutes
  • 1030°C 30 minutes
  • Plate quench
  • Kitchen freezer
  • Temper at 200°C for 2 hours, twice
