An Economical Way to Start Making Fused Glass Jewelry
Paragon’s exciting MagicFuse kiln fires glass inside a microwave oven. It reaches glass fusing temperatures in only minutes! This is the perfect way to introduce yourself and your loved ones to the amazing world of glass fused jewelry. Create stunning jewelry that your family and friends will treasure. Experiment with the huge selection of glass colors available from your local stained glass supplier. And, unlike the competition, the MagicFuse is made in America from high temperature ceramic fiber.
Place the kiln inside a microwave oven and turn on the power. The kiln will reach 1500°F (815°C) in about 5 – 8 minutes. (Firing time depends on the wattage and brand of the microwave oven.)
Liz van der Werff wrote, “I have to tell you that I absolutely LOVE the MagicFuse microwave kiln. I am totally addicted! I have made some really pretty jewelry. Even though a lot of people say that I should use the ‘real’ kiln for this, I truly enjoy the instant gratification of having the fused glass melt and cool in under an hour! And it does a fantastic job with all the glass I’ve tried, including dichroic and inclusions. You guys at Paragon really rock!”
Dazzling Glass Colors
Create beautiful glass fused pendants and earrings. Discover how the heat magically transforms dichroic glass and a wide variety of stained glass colors into glistening treasures. Enjoy hours of creative entertainment with your whole family.
The MagicFuse is fast! Within an hour after you begin fusing, the glass will be cool to the touch. Experiment with new designs in the MagicFuse before filling your larger kiln with production loads.
Begin an Adventure in Learning
Firing the MagicFuse requires skill. Because the kiln fires so rapidly, glass pieces should be limited in size to 2 layers of 1 ½” x 1 ½” or smaller. Larger sizes or additional layers of glass must be pre-heated for 5 minutes at a 50% power setting on the microwave. Otherwise the glass will break.
Annealing in a separate kiln is unnecessary for small glass pieces such as earrings and small pendants. The glass must also be free of glue, grease, and fingerprints. The rapid firing of these contaminants can cause the glass to break.
Firing times may vary from one firing to the next even within the same microwave oven. The firing times vary between sizes and brands of microwave ovens, and a MagicFuse kiln that is still warm from a previous firing takes less time to fire than a cold kiln. For these reasons, don a pair of safety glasses and visually check the glass a minute or two before it is done. Then fire longer and check it again. Remove the MagicFuse kiln when the glass has fused just the way you had envisioned. The glass begins to fuse during the last 30 seconds of firing. This is why you should visually inspect the glass to obtain precise fusing results.
The Microwave Oven
The MagicFuse requires a microwave oven, which is not included. The voltage, watts, and amps shown in the specifications below are for a typical 1100 watt microwave oven. Since the MagicFuse does not contain heating elements, the electrical specs will vary depending on the microwave you own and the country where you live.
If you remove the MagicFuse kiln after the glass has fused, the heat will not build up inside the microwave oven. The MagicFuse reaches higher temperatures than you will ever encounter in your kitchen. But the firing is so rapid that the heat does not have time to work its way to the outside surface of the kiln.
You can fire the MagicFuse in the same microwave oven you use for cooking as long as you clean the microwave oven after each fusing session. If, however, you fire ceramic fiber paper, you might want to fire glass in a separate oven. This is because the fiber paper produces fumes.
Controlling Heat Distribution Inside the Kiln
Firing the MagicFuse kiln on the microwave’s food rotator tray produces better heat distribution inside the kiln than firing without the tray. However, in some microwaves the rotator tray jerks as it turns, moving glass pieces out of position. If this is a problem with your microwave, either use a different microwave, or remove the rotator tray and rollers from the microwave. If you cannot remove the rotator parts, then turn the rotator tray upside-down, and place 3 of the ½” ceramic posts that came with your kiln on the tray.
