Description
735A51 is a chrome vanadium spring steel. 735A51 is suited for oil hardening and tempering. Hardened 735A51 offers excellent toughness and shock resistance which makes it a suitable alloy spring steel for parts exposed to stress, shock and vibration. When used in the oil hardened and tempered condition this spring steel combines spring characteristics with good wear and abrasion.
Recommended Working Sequence
Forging:  Heat to 2200 °F (1050 °C) maximum, and do not forge after forging stock has dropped below approximately 1600 °F (840 °C)
Normalizing: Heat to 1600 °F (870 °C) and cool in still air.
Annealing: Heat slowly to 820-840 °C, soak well and cool slowly in a furnace.
Grinding or Machining
Hardening: Heat slowly to 650-700 °C and thoroughly soak. Continue to heat to the final hardening temp of 830-860 °C and quench in oil.
Tempering: Immediately after quenching, reheat to the temperature required to provide the desired hardness, and soak for a minium of 2 hours. Cool in air. Temperatures will be between 400-600 °C.
